The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up their first win of the season, defeating the Carleton Ravens 5-2 on Saturday (Oct. 11) night in Ottawa, Ont.
Third-year forward Abby Whitworth led the charge offensively for U of T, scoring her first career OUA hat trick.
The Blues and Ravens traded goals in the first period as the Blues got the edge first when Whitworth cam flying down the wing and sent a shot through the five-hole of Carleton's goaltender Kaitlyn Langille for her first goal of the season. Silken Nicholas evened the score but the response from Carleton didn't phase U of T, who restored the lead when fifth-year defender Kalie Chan finished off a pass on her backhand from fourth-year forward Emma Elders.
94 seconds into the second period, Whitworth and fellow third-year forward Christina Alexiou stormed into the offensive zone on a two-on-one attack. Alexiou sent the puck over to Whitworth as the Port Moody, B.C., native's second goal of the game gave U of T a two-goal lead. Whitworth completed the hat trick midway through the period, forcing a turnover in front of the Ravens net and taking advantage of the defensive zone error to complete the hat trick. With two seconds left in the second period, Vicky Kay cut into Toronto's lead to 4-2 going into the second intermission.
The third period saw the Blues shut the door defensively while continuing to apply offensive pressure. The power play got on the scoreboard for the first time this season as Elders notched her second assist of the game, finding Blues captain Kaitlyn McKnight in front of the net to provide an insurance marker for the road team. From that point onward the Blues controlled the pace of play to neutralize any attempt of a Ravens comeback.
Second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon made 23 saves in her first win of the season.
The Blues are back in action on Friday (Oct. 17) night when they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on
