The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team saw their CCSA National Championship run in Calgary come to an end following an 8-1 quarter-final loss versus the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday (Oct. 11) morning.
After achieving a 2-1 record on Day 1 of the national championship, the Blues qualified for a quarter-final meeting with the Huskies. U of T would struggle early with the Canada West opponent, conceding six runs through the first two innings. The offence would make a dent in the bottom of the fifth, bringing one runner across home plate, but it wouldn't be enough to spur on a complete comeback effort.
Third-year infielder Shirley Chan topped the Blues at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing, including a double. Meanwhile, fourth-year outfielder Isabella Trakosas notched the lone RBI for the Blues with a sacrifice fly scoring Kae Li Whiton who reached third after a single and Chan's double.
In the pitching circle, the trio of Alexa Aquanno, Vanessa Jeffrey, and Olivia Mather all worked an inning or more in the hard fought quarter-final loss.
Toronto will now shift their focus to the OUS Provincial Championship, scheduled to take place from Oct. 17-19 in Innerkip, Ont. The Blues will enter as defending champions and OUS East division winners.
