Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BLUES FALL TO GEE-GEES IN THEIR SEASON OPENER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 2-0 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday (Oct. 10) night in Ottawa, Ont.

The Blues were hungry out of the gate in their season opener with an aggressive forecheck and strong defensive play. With less than a minute remaining in the first period the Gee-Gees broke the ice with a power play goal from Beatrice Bilodeau.

In the second period the Blues continued to play a strong game. Despite quality chances Gee-Gees goaltender Clara Genier was strong between the pipes to keep U of T off the scoresheet. On the defensive side, Toronto was effective in the neutral zone stifling Ottawa's offence and keeping the scoreboard unchanged after two periods of play.

In the third frame the Blues pushed for offence as second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon made key saves to keep the Blue and White within one. Late in the period, Ottawa's power play capitalized again with a goal from Rebecca Morissette. U of T continued to push until the final buzzer as they fired 26 shots on net through 60 minutes of play, but Genier was able to pick up the shutout.

McKinnon and third-year goaltender Carlee Vance combined for 21 saves.

The Blues will have a quick turnaround as they'll stay in Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens on Saturday (Oct. 11) afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
