U OF T GOES 2-1 ON DAY 1 OF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team went 2-1 on the opening day of the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association National Championship in Calgary on Friday (Oct. 10).

Toronto opened their weekend with an exciting 3-2 victory over the Humber Hawks. Tied in the bottom of the fifth, a sacrifice fly from second-year infielder Tala Rennie would score the game-winning run for the Blues. Also a highlight of the game, third-year infielder hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, marking her second home run in as many weeks. In the pitching circle, fourth-year veteran Joely Ma went four innings allowing three hits, two walks, and two runs while striking out five. Third-year pitcher Olivia Mather picked up the win after holding the Hawks hitless across two innings of work.

Shifting to Game 2 on the day, U of T took down the Windsor Lancers 13-5. Four different Blues batters recorded multiple RBI. Second-year standout Alexia Verches recorded a game-high four RBI, while Rennie and second-year catcher Sydney Bacheller each knocked in three. Verches and Bacheller combined for five hits, including two home runs. Second-year pitcher Vanessa Jeffrey earned the win, while Mather made another strong relief appearance.

The Blues closed out their day with a 5-0 loss versus the UBCO Heat. The defeat marks just the second of the season for U of T who now hold a 21-2 overall record following Friday's tripleheader. Toronto was limited to just four hits in the five-inning contest. Second-year pitcher Alexa Aquanno went 3.2 innings against the very tough Heat lineup, conceding just three earned runs on five hits for UBCO.

Action will shift from round-robin to elimination games on Saturday (Oct. 11). A confirmed opponent and start time for the Blues are to follow.
