U OF T SWIMMERS MEDAL AT LUXEMBOURG EURO MEET

University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimmers Carter Buck, Jacob Gallant, Nathan Thomas, Bill Dongfang, Michael Sava, and Katie Marovino all made the trip across the Atlantic to compete this weekend at the 2025 Luxembourg Euro Meet.

Opening the international event on Friday (Jan. 31), the trio of Dongfang, Sava, and Gallant all earned medals.

"Any time you can travel across the ocean and recover in just a couple days to swim a season best time against a tough field is a real accomplishment," said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald.

For Dongfang, a silver medal result in the men's 200m butterfly (1:58.77) marked his first international medal. Meanwhile, Sava saw himself in seventh in the same event heading to the last length, before making an incredible push all the way up to a bronze medal finish (2:01.91). Donfang would additionally add a seventh-place finish in the 100m butterfly (54.37).

"It's a real advantage that these two have each other," said McDonald. "They hammer each other in training and are getting so fit that they can make these leaps forward."

As for Gallant, the medley specialist picked up a bronze medal in the men's 400m IM, reaching the finish in a time of 4:24.93. He would also add a fourth-place finish in the 200m IM (2:05.95) and 10th-place result in the men's 200m breaststroke (2:21.49).

"Elite sport isn't easy, but Jacob has an amazing resume with a national gold in every year of his three years competing at U SPORTS championships in the 400m IM," said MacDonald. "That's a rare feat and he is once again rounding back into shape to try and add to that strong of success this year."

For the other Blues swimmers in attendance, Buck placed sixth in the men's 50m backstroke (26.82), seventh in the 100m backstroke (58.15), and eighth in the 200m backstroke (2:08.90). Meanwhile, Marovino picked up a 10th-place finish in the women's 1500m (17:44.64) and a 12th-place result in the 800m (9:12.27). Thomas rounded out the results placing seventh in the men's 200m breaststroke (2:17.28) and 18th in the men's 100m breaststroke (1:03.85)

Following the event, the entirety of the Blues men's and swimming teams will head to the 2025 OUA Championships, hosted at Markham Pan Am Centre, from Feb. 7-9.
