Competing in the second game of the home-and-home Metro Hoops Classic series, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 51-33 versus the TMU Bold on Wednesday (Jan. 29) night inside the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Toronto opened the contest with a stifling defensive performance, holding the Bold to just a single point through the first six minutes of the contest. However, the No. 9 nationally ranked Bold finally found their form late in the frame, taking back the lead and never looking back. The Blues once again put together a strong rebounding effort, grabbing 34 defensive rebounds to limit the second chance points for the home side. However, turnovers and a stagnated offence proved costly for U of T, allowing TMU to pull away with big runs in both the second and third quarters.
Playing a team-high 32 minutes, fourth-year guard Kaylee Williams topped the Blues with nine points on the night, adding three rebounds, one assist, and two steals. In the paint, forward Jade Diwandja Djemba and Zi Yang Wang combined for 11 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks.
Meanwhile, the Bold were led by a game-high 18 points from Kallie Hall, while Hailey Franco Deryck added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. TMU earned the sweep in the inaugural Metro Hoops Classic series, previously defeating Toronto 59-45 at the Goldring Centre in early November.
U of T will continue a five-game road swing next heading to challenge the York Lions at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday (Feb. 1). Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the game streamed via
