FAIRLIE SHUTS OUT NIPISSING IN FRIDAY NIGHT WIN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 5-0 against the Nipissing Lakers in their Friday (Jan. 24) evening game at Varsity Arena.

The Blues continue their success at home in 2025 as they win their fifth straight at Varsity Arena since returning from the winter break.

Looking to get back on track after a road loss against the TMU Bold last weekend, the Blues put 14 shots on net in the first period. Nipissing's netminder Zach Roy was the difference maker and kept the first period scoreless despite Toronto's dominating offensive push. On the other end, second-year goalie Jordan Fairlie made five routine saves.

Thirty seconds into the second period, a power play gave the Blues the opportunity they needed to find the scoresheet. After winning a faceoff in the Lakers end, Owen Robinson grabbed a loose puck and found Mark Cooper from across the zone. Keeping possession, the third-year defenceman beat the Lakers defence down the boards to slide the puck to Nicholas Wong who tapped it into the open net. Minutes later, Ben Woodhouse set up a screen and deflected Aiden Reeves' point shot to grab Toronto's second goal.

The Blues added to their lead as Moskal sauced a pass across the ice to Robinson on a 2-on-1, who flipped a shot over Roy's shoulder and into the top corner. Not long after, Moskal continued his strong night by stealing the puck from the Nipissing defence and going down on a breakaway, netting Toronto's fourth goal as he made a nice move around Roy. Julian Recine kept things rolling as he sniped a rocket from the point to bring the Blues up to five goals on the night.

Fairlie made 28 saves to grab his second shutout of the season. This win brings the Blues record up to 13-9, good for third place in the OUA West.

The Blues will be back at Varsity Arena for a rematch with the Lakers on Saturday, Jan. 25. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tickets are free for students and available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, and the game can be streamed online via oua.tv
