The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 6-0 against the Nipissing Lakers in the second half of their back-to-back on Saturday (Jan. 25) evening.
Coming off a dominant 5-0 shutout win yesterday, the Blues were looking for a similar result. The first period saw both teams locked in a tight defensive battle, with neither able to break through. The Blues worked hard to generate scoring chances, but Nipissing's defence held strong. At the other end, Rayce Ramsay was a standout in net, making key saves and staying solid to keep the game scoreless.
Early in the second period, the Blues capitalized on a five-minute powerplay to grab their first goal as Nicholas Wong delivered a perfect pass to Owen Robinson who tipped the puck in the net for his 11th goal of the season. Just past the midway mark of the opening frame, Dylan Wightman converted on a penalty shot to extend the Blues lead. Skating in on Lakers goaltender Reece Proulx, Wightman fired a quick shot that slid off Proulx's pad and snuck inside the post. Moments later, Emmett Serensits added to the tally, unleashing a powerful slapshot that soared past Proulx and into the top corner. With three minutes remaining in the period, Julian Recine set up Owen Hollingsworth, who fired a sharp snapshot to cap an explosive second frame for the Blues.
U of T grabbed their fifth goal midway through the third period as power duo Robinson and Wong went down on another 2-on-1, with Robinson slicing a pass over to Wong who tipped it top shelf. Robinson grabbed the Blues sixth goal when Wong found him alone in front of the Lakers net. The goal marked the third point of the game for both players, capping off two dominant performances. On the other end, Ramsay earned a shutout as he stopped all 27 Nipissing shots.
This win brings the Blues record to 14-9, which puts them in first place in the OUA West. The Blues will travel to Ottawa, Ont., as they look to continue their success next weekend, where they face the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The game can be streamed online via oua.tv.
