The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell short by a final score of 72-50 versus the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday (Jan. 22) night inside the Goldring Centre - Kimel Family Field House.
The game served as part of the annual U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure campaign with this season marking the 18th edition of the initiative which is set to surpass $2 million in donations for breast cancer research. Donations can be made online via the
Canadian Cancer Society.
On the court, the Blues offensive efforts were led by second-year guard Raya Hafez who scored a team-high 16 points, adding five rebounds to round out her night. U of T first-year guard Lia Barbieri contributed nine points, four rebounds and three assists, while fifth-year forward Thuraya Abdul Hamid was dominant on the glass grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds while chipping in with six points.
Despite a strong rebounding effort for the Blues, which saw them out-rebound their opponents 51-46 with an impressive 21 offensive boards, Toronto could not keep pace with the outside shooting from the Golden Hawks.
