The University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming teams continued their 2025 schedule with a dual meet against the Calgary Dinos, hosting the No. 2 nationally ranked men's and women's swimming teams.
The No. 3 nationally ranked Blues men's swimming team defeated the Dinos by a score of 88-63, while the No. 3 nationally ranked Toronto women's team won on an 82-63 point advantage.
The Blues women's squad trailed the Dinos 22-20 after the first four events, but stormed back with three consecutive first- and second-place finishes (100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, and 50m freestyle) to reclaim the lead, which they held comfortably for the remainder of the meet.
Katie Marovino led the way for Toronto's women's team, finishing first in the 200m, 400m, and 800m freestyles.
"Katie is carrying a big load for the team in the distance events and can even help in the shorter races," said Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald.
Double winners on the day for the Toronto women were Nina Mollin (400m IM, 100m butterfly), Angelica Bath (100m, 200m backstroke), and Teagan Vander Leek (50m, 100m freestyle). Mollin's 400m IM time gave her a new meet record.
"The men were fairly dominant, which bodes well for nationals," said Blues swimming assistant head coach Linda Kiefer.
The U of T men won 12 of the 13 individual races in the meet, and meet records were set by Ben Loewen (100m butterfly), Liam Weaver (50m freestyle), and Jacob Gallant (400m IM).
Men's double event winners for U of T were Loewen (100m butterfly, 200m backstroke), Gallant (200m breaststroke, 400m IM), Bill Dongfang (200m freestyle, 200m butterfly), and Quinn Matteis (400m freestyle, 800m freestyle).
"This is the first time we have tried an important meet this early in the term and it was a challenge. I'm pleased with the swims and the victory as the athletes are coming off of the exam break and have gone through intense training since New Year's," said MacDonald.
The Blues are back in action on Saturday, January 18, as they host the Western Mustangs at Athletic Centre – Varsity Pool for a dual meet with a start time of 11:15 a.m.
