TORONTO SPLITS BACK-TO-BACK DAYS IN WATERLOO

Continuing a busy weekend on the road to open their OUS regular season schedule, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Waterloo Warriors 15-2 and 7-0, before falling 6-5 and 19-1 versus the Laurier Golden Hawks in back-to-back days.

Beginning on Saturday (Sept. 7), the Blues were in fine form as they made quick work of the Warriors in their afternoon doubleheader. Toronto scored nine runs in the first two innings of the opener, eventually leading to a shortened four inning contest courtesy the large advantage. Both Olivia Mather and Alexia Verches tallied four RBI, while seven total Blues batters registered an RBI in the win. Julia Lacaria earned the win in the pitching circle, conceding just two runs on five hits through the four innings, striking out four.

In the follow up, Joely Ma and Mather combined in the pitching circle for the shutout of the Warriors. The pair allowed just one hit, while striking out six combined. Verches kept her hot bat going, adding another three RBI, including a home run, while Janelle Hodge also tallied three RBI courtesy a home run.

Shifting to Sunday and the Golden Hawks, the two teams opened with a tightly contested match, which was finished by a walk-off from the home side in the bottom of the seventh. Five Blues batters recorded two hits, with Hodge and Lauren Howorth both finishing the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Pitching was split between Alexa Aquanno and Mather, with Aquanno striking out three and Mather one.

Closing out the busy weekend, U of T's stamina was tested as they competed in their sixth game in three days. A weekend high 10 errors allowed Laurier to score early and led to a shortened contest. Mather registered the lone Toronto RBI, while Ma and Lacaria were dealt the loss in the pitching circle.

Following a much needed few days off, the Blues will next challenge the TMU Bold at Hendon Park on Saturday (Sept. 14). After the doubleheader, Toronto will then host their home opener at Thomson Memorial Park the following weekend, welcoming the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens for back-to-back days on Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21.
