The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in a closely contested match on Friday (Sep. 6) night at Varsity Stadium.
Toronto Metropolitan struck first, with forward Taliyah Walker scoring an unassisted goal in the 12th minute, giving the Bold an early 1-0 lead. The Varsity Blues responded with consistent offensive pressure, registering 14 shots throughout the match, but Bold goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci kept them at bay with six crucial saves.
The Blues dominated in corner kicks, earning 11 opportunities compared to none for Toronto Metropolitan, but struggled to capitalize on their chances. Midway through the second half, Toronto Metropolitan extended their lead to 2-0 after Aalayah Lully found the back of the net in the 68th minute.
In the closing minutes of the game, Toronto's Hannah Chown brought the Blues back within striking distance, scoring in the 86th minute off an assist from Samantha Gravina. Despite their efforts, the Blues couldn't find the equalizer before the final whistle.
Toronto goalkeeper Juliana Ottoni made one save, but it wasn't enough to prevent the loss.
The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back in their next match as they play the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks tomorrow (Sep. 7) night.
