BLUES GO 1-1 WITH GEE-GEES

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-2, before dropping a narrow 3-2 decision on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22) at Thomson Memorial Park.
 
Toronto 3, Ottawa 2
 
Alexa Aquanno earned the win for Varsity Blues. The righty gave up five hits and two runs (zero earned) over six innings, striking out five and walking one. Olivia Mather pitched one inning of zero-run ball for Varsity Blues in relief. The pitcher gave up two hits, striking out one and walking none.
 
The Varsity Blues got on the board in the first inning after Alexia Verches singled, scoring one run. Verches went 2-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in.
 
Ottawa 3, Toronto 2
 
The game was tied at two in the bottom of the eighth when Ottawa's Addison Kane singled, scoring one run.
 
Both teams were strong in the circle. Ottawa pitchers struck out three, while the Varsity Blues sat down four.
 
U of T was the first to get on the board in the second when Sophia Desy induced Zoe Goldberg to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored.
 
Ottawa tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh thanks to two doubles. Ottawa tied the game at two on a double by Kyleigh Forth.
 
Joely Ma took the loss for Varsity Blues. The hurler went one inning, surrendering zero runs on two hits, striking out none and walking none. Vanessa Jeffrey started in the circle for Varsity Blues. The pitcher surrendered four hits and two runs over six and one-third innings, striking out four and walking one.
 
Janelle Hodge and Tala Rennie were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Varsity Blues. Olivia Mather and Goldberg were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Varsity Blues. Mather led Varsity Blues with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating four walks for the game.
 
The Blues are back in action next Friday, September 27 when they travel to take on the York Lions.
