The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 2-0 to the UNB Reds in their fourth exhibition game on Saturday (Sept. 21) night at Varsity Arena. Â
The Varsity Blues demonstrated their defensive talent as they battled through a scoreless first period. Despite facing heavy offensive pressure, with UNB firing 18 shots on goal, Toronto's defence and third-year goaltender Rayce Ramsay held firm. The Blues managed seven shots of their own, creating a few dangerous chances but were unable to get on the board. Â
Despite both teams searching for the game's opening goal, the second period remained a stalemate. The Varsity Blues turned up the pressure, nearly doubling their shot count to 17 but couldn't get past UNB's netminder Samuel Richard. On the other end, UNB continued to test Rayce Ramsay, bringing their shot count to 32. Â
The last 20 minutes saw UNB light the lamp when Cody Morgan found the back of the net, assisted by Benjamin Corbeil. Toronto had opportunities to tie the game, including multiple power plays, but couldn't get the lucky bounces. Rayce Ramsay put up another stellar performance, saving 44 out of 45 shots. However, with under a minute left, UNB's Kale McCallum put in an empty net goal. Â
Â
Despite the loss, the Varsity Blues showcased strong defensive play and resilience, holding off several power plays and constant pressure in front of the net. Â
The Blues will be looking to bounce back on Friday (Sept. 27) night against the University of Windsor Lancers in Windsor. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Â
