For the first time since 2015-16, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams swept the national banners as the 2024 U SPORTS championships wrapped up on Saturday night at the Pointe Claire Aquatic Centre in Montreal.

TEAM STANDINGS:

Toronto's women claim their third consecutive and 18th national title in program history. The Blues completed their comeback on Day 3, overcoming a 108.5 point deficit from Day 1. U of T finished with 1,444 points, ahead of the Thunderbirds (1300.5) and Calgary Dinos (872.5).
It marks the Blues men's first U SPORTS title since 2015-16 and 20
th national banner since first hoisting the Nelson C Hart Trophy in 1965-66. Toronto led the meet from start to finish and ended up with 1,145 points, ahead of Calgary (922.5) and the host McGill Redbirds (893) Â

"I am so proud of these swimmers," said Byron MacDonald, who was named the 2023-24 U SPORTS men's coach of the year. "We sat down in September and set the goal to sweep the national banners. Â It was lots of hard work and some hiccups but here we are."

"The drivers of this year's victory lies right at the feet of co-captains Graeme Aylward and Mahaylia Datars," added MacDonald. "They never wavered and their leadership helped the others to believe and jump on the bus."

MEN'S RESULTS:

Rookie sensation Bill Dongfang won his second gold medal of the championships, breaking the U SPORTS record in the 200 butterfly in 2:00.17. Ben Loewen earned the silver medal in 2:00.85. Michael Sava (2:01.99) and Brendan Oswald (2:09.61) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Loewen also led a 3-4-5-7 finish in the men's 200m backstroke. He earned the bronze medal with a time of 2:03.87, ahead of Carter Buck (2:04.42), Brendan Oswald (2:06.76) and Andrew Herman (2:08.94).

2020 Olympian Gabe Mastromatteo claimed the 50 breaststroke bronze medal in 28.33 seconds, with team co-captain Graeme Aylward placing sixth in 28.94.

Andrew Herman, Mastromatteo, Dongfang and Jack Li ended the three-day meet with a silver-medal finish in the 400 medley relay.

WOMEN'S RESULTS:

Second-year standout Nina Mollin won her third gold medal in as many days, touching the wall first in the 200 butterfly in 2:16.53.
Â
Fifth-year veteran Ainsley McMurray (55.67) and Lily Chubaty (57.26) finished 1-2 in the women's freestyle. It was McMurray's second gold medal of the meet and Chubaty's first national individual podium finish. Teagan Vander Leek placed seventh in 58.12.

Katie Schroeder, Shannon Russell, Mollin and McMurray put the icing on the Day-3 cake with a gold-medal finish in the 400 medley relay, touching the wall in 4:11.04.

Haley Klenk (2:15.73) and Schroeder (2:16.54) finished 2-3 in the women's backstroke, while Angelica Bath was fourth in 2:17.85. Tegan McKenzie was sixth (2:19.65) and Raili Kary was eighth (2:21.93)

Distance specialist Anna Hein her second medal in as many days, claiming the silver medal in the grueling 800 freestyle in 9:04.47. Mahaylia Datars was sixth in 9:06.87.

Russell rounded out the Top 8 finishes on Day 3, placing sixth in the 50 breaststroke in 33.00 seconds. Â
