BLUES EARN 14 MEDALS ON DAY 2 OF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Toronto men's swimming team surged ahead, while the Varsity Blues women closed the gap on an action-packed Day 2 of the 2024 U SPORTS championships (March 8) hosted by McGill University at the Pointe Claire Aquatic Centre.
 
TEAM STANDINGS:
 
Toronto's men more than doubled their Day 1 lead and remain in first place with 788 points, ahead of the Calgary Dinos (623.5) and UBC Thunderbirds (612.5). The Blues women, who trailed UBC by 108.5 points after Day 1, has cut the T-Birds lead down to 37.5 after Day 2. UBC leads with 1,0003 points, while Toronto has 965.5. Calgary sits in a distant third with 587 points.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS:
 
Fifth-year veteran Ainsley McMurray won one gold and earned two bronze medals on Friday night. The 2023-24 OUA swimmer of the year won her third consecutive women's 50 freestyle title, touching the wall in 25.68 seconds. Teagan Vander Leek (26.46) and Lily Chubaty (26.56) were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Gemma Norman was seventh in 26.59 seconds.
 
McMurray also claimed the bronze medal in the 50 butterfly in 27.85, while Caroline Carruthers was seventh in 28.41 seconds. McMurray then anchored the 800 freestyle relay team as she and Haley Klenk, Teagan McKenzie and Mahaylia Datars placed third in 8:27.95.
 
Third-year distance specialist Anna Hein won her first career individual national title, claiming the 400 freestyle gold in 4:22.48, just ahead of McGill's Naomie Lo (4:22.71) and Datars, who earned bronze in 4:23.09. Datars was also named the winner of the U SPORTS women's community service award on Day 1 of the championships.
 
Nina Mollin won her second national title in as many days, winning the 200 individual medley in a tight race with a time of 2:18.35. Fellow Varsity Blue Shannon Russell placed sixth (2:21.59).  
 
Rookie standout Katie Schroeder (1:02.63) and Klenk (1:02.76) finished 2-3 in the women's 100 backstroke, while rounding out U of T's Top 8 finishes on Day 2 was Tina Guan, who placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:40.59.
 
 
MEN
 
After claiming silver for back-to-back seasons, third-year sprinter Liam Weaver found the top of the podium in the men's 50 freestyle, clocking a time of 22.72 seconds, over four tenths of a second ahead of the silver medalist.
 
Sophomore standout Ben Loewen also won his first individual national gold medal, winning the 200 IM in a time of 2:03.66. Fellow Varsity Blue Jacob Gallant claimed the bronze medal in 2:05.72.
 
Earlier in the night, Gallant earned the 200 breaststroke silver medal in a time of 2:18.17, while Graeme Aylward was fifth (2:20.37) and Gabe Mastromatteo was eighth (2:28.21).
Backstroke specialist Andrew Herman picked up his second silver medal of the meet, finishing second in the 100 backstroke in 55.84.
 
Max Tambling, Jack Li, Brendan Oswald and Bill Dongfang capped off Day 2 with a silver-medal performance in the men's 800 freestyle relay in 7:32.99.
 
Tambling also earned a sixth-place finish in the men's 400 freestyle n 4:00.45.
