The No. 7 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up a 4-1 win against the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon in Windsor, Ont.
Â
The Blues got off to a fast start in the game and were able to strike in the opening minutes of the first period. The Blues sustained offensive zone pressure and hemmed the Lancers in their own end before fifth-year defender Caroline Eagles sprung a pass to an open Aili McKeown in front of the net. The third-year forward's shot squeezed through Lancers goalie Cadence Petitclerc and into the back of the net for McKeown's fourth goal of the season.
Â
The Blues kept their foot on the gas and were able to keep their momentum going after fifth-year goaltender Erica Fryer made some big saves. Toronto doubled their lead with just over six minutes remaining in the period as third-year forward Nikki McDonald capitalized on a Lancers turnover, finding the back of the net for her sixth of the season to give the Blues a 2-0 lead.
Â
With seven minutes left in the second period, the Lancers got a goal back as Jessica Gribbon's power play marker got Windsor on the scoreboard and cut Toronto's lead in half. The Blues were able to regain their two-goal lead late in the second period. Fryer played the puck and taking advantage of a Lancers line change, fired it down the ice to McDonald who passed the puck to third-year forward Abby Howland, who beat Lancers goalie Kristen Swiatoschik to score her second goal of the season.
Â
Late in the third period first-year forward Taylor Delahey's power play goal gave the Blues some insurance. The Blues cycled the puck around in the Lancers end of the ice as Eagles and third-year defender Francesca Monte passed the puck around the blueline, Monte found Delahey to secure the 4-1 win for the Blues.
Â
Fryer finished the game with 20 saves and also picked up her first assist of the season on Howland's goal.
Â
The Blues will wrap up their road trip on Sunday (Feb. 4) afternoon when they take on the Western Mustangs at Thompson Arena in London, Ont. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on
