The No. 7 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up their second 4-1 win in as many days, defeating the Western Mustangs on Sunday (Feb. 4) afternoon in London, Ont.
Â
The Blues got off to a fast start in the game, scoring three goals in the first period. B.C. natives Abby Whitworth and Emma Elders got the ball rolling for the Blues, connecting for the game's opening goal less than four minutes into the game. Whitworth broke into the offensive zone as Elders slipped behind a Mustangs defender before receiving a pass to find the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Â
Keeping their foot on the gas pedal, fifth-year defender Caroline Eagles passed the puck to Elders in as she broke into the offensive zone to set up third-year forward Emma Irwin, who beat Western goaltender Brooke Vaccari for her fourth of the season.
Â
Less than a minute later, the Blues struck again. As the Blues created chaos in the offensive zone, first-year forward Ashley Delahey pounced on a puck in front of the net and buried it for her first goal in the OUA to put the Blues ahead by three goals.
Â
Western got one back late in the period when forward Janique LaBrossiere picked up her third goal of the season, but the Blues exited the ice after 20 minutes of play ahead by a pair of goals.
Â
After a scoreless second period, action picked up again in the third. In the second half of the final frame, the Blues picked up a power play goal as third-year forward Sophie Grawbarger notched her eighth goal of the season to give the Blues a three goal lead.
Â
With the Blues up 4-1, fifth-year goalie Erica Fryer continued to shut the door in net, making 25 saves as the Blues capped off their weekend road trip with a win over Western.
