Following the conclusion of Day 1 (Feb. 16) at the 2024 OUA Swimming Championships in St. Catharines, Ont., both the Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams hold the overall lead in their race for another provincial title.
In total, the Blues accounted for 32 of the 80 A-Final participants, equaling 40 percent of the A-Final swimmers on Day 1 of the championships. This allowed the national contenders to build the early lead in both the men's and women's overall standings.
Capturing 10 total medals, including six gold, the No. 2 nationally ranked Varsity Blues women sit atop the team standings with 378 points. Right behind U of T is Western (223) in second place and McMaster (178) in third.
Leading the charge for the Blues women was fifth-year veteran Ainsley McMurray who captured gold in the 200m freestyle, along with relay gold in both the 4x50m freestyle relay and 4x100m medley relay.
"The most thrilling race of the night was the women's 4x100m medley relay," said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald. "Our rival in Western has OUA record holder Shona Beaton in the breaststroke, so the plan was to make up time where we could and then in the final leg hope Ainsley (McMurray) could do her magic. That is exactly what happened with Ainsley catching and passing the Western anchor swimmer with an incredible 53.5 split."
Meanwhile, the No. 3 Varsity Blues men's team earned 11 provincial medals on Day 1, including five gold. The Toronto men are in first place with 340 total points scored, followed by Western (215) and McMaster (189).
Similar to their female counterparts, the Toronto men swept the 50m backstroke podium. This was headlined by a new OUA Championship record time of 24.98 by second-year backstroke specialist Andrew Herman, who achieved the feat in just his first provincial championship appearance with the Blues. The time also marks the second fastest 50m backstroke in U of T program history.
"It was a thrilling night of racing with lots of spectacular performances," added MacDonald. "It is always sweet to sweep the podium, so to get that from both the women's and men's 50m backstroke events was amazing to see. Then just to add, watching Brendan (Oswald) swim to a silver in the grueling 400 IM was something special. He came back after surgery on both elbows, arms in slings, then rehab, unsure if he would make it back. And then bam – a silver medal tonight. What a comeback."
The three-day OUA Swimming Championships continue tomorrow (Feb. 17) morning with the preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre. The Top 8 from each prelim race then advance to the A-Finals, which take place later in the evening beginning at 6 p.m. Both the preliminary and final races are streamed live on
