DELAHEY SCORES IN OVERTIME TO COMPLETE COMEBACK AGAINST TMU

In a thriller at Varsity Arena, first-year forward Ashley Delahey scored the overtime winner as the No. 7 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey cameback to defeat the TMU Bold 3-2 on Thursday (Feb. 15) night.

The Blues came to play, peppering the Bold with shots early but despite firing 10 shots on goal in the opening frame, TMU goaltender Alexia Stratos was on her game, holding the Blues scoreless. TMU got going offensively in the second half of the first period but fifth-year goalie Eric Fryer held her ground, stopping the eight shots sent her way to hold TMU scoreless and zeros on the scoreboard after the first. Fryer finished the night with 19 saves.

The Bold got a scoring chance early in the second period but Fryer stretched out her left pad to keep the game scoreless. TMU opened the scoring just over five minutes into the second period as Megan Breen jammed in a rebound to put the Blues down by one.

TMU added a goal shortly afterwards when Gabby Gareau stormed into the Blues zone and found the back of the net to make it 2-0. The Blues continued to push for a goal and despite the quality chances they couldn't find the back of the net until a lucky bounce went their way.

On a delayed penalty, Stratos was skating to the bench for the extra skater. On the play a TMU defender passed the puck backwards but with no help behind her, the puck sailed into the empty net to get the Blues on the board. Delahey was credited with her second goal of the season.

Entering the third period down by one goal the Blues continued to push. With 10 seconds left in the game and Fryer on the bench, third-year forward Katy McKenna pounced on a loose puck in front of the net, sending the game to overtime with her fourth goal of the season.

Overtime was fast paced as both teams traded chances but under two minutes into the period, Taylor Delahey kicked the puck to her twin sister, who was alone in the slot. Delahey danced around Stratos, burying the puck into the back of the net for her second goal of the night, sending the fans at Varsity Arena home happy as the Blues picked up their 19th win of the season.

The Blues will tie a knot on the regular season on seniors' night this Saturday (Feb. 17) night when they host the Queen's Gaels at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.
