NO. 7 BLUES FALL TO GAELS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

The No. 7 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team lost 2-0 to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Feb. 17) night at Varsity Arena.

After a ceremony to honour the 13 graduating Blues, Toronto controlled the pace of play in the opening frame, outshooting Queen's eight to three with most of the play happening in the offensive zone. Despite the great start, zeros were up on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play.

The Gaels struck early in the second period as Scout Watkins-Southward found the back of the net to put the Blues down by one. The Blues kept getting chances as fifth-year goalie Erica Fryer made saves to keep the Blues down by one but luck wasn't on their side in the second period. Queen's forward Mikayla Cranney added a goal late in the second period, extending the Gaels lead to two after two periods of play.

Trailing by two, the Blues pushed for offence in the third period. Despite getting quality scoring chances throughout the period as they looked to cut the deficit, luck wasn't on Toronto's side in the game as the puck continued to stay out of the back of the net.

Fighting until the very end, the Blues couldn't find the back of the net before the final buzzer, losing to the Gaels in their final game of the regular season. Fryer finished the game with 26 saves to cap off her stellar regular season between the pipes.

The Blues will now turn their attention to the playoffs. Entering the postseason as the No. 2 seed in the OUA West the Blues will matchup against the Gaels in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Tickets are available at varsityblues.ca/ticketsand the game will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
