The No. 5 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team were defeated 1-0 on the road against the Queen's Gaels on Sunday (Feb. 11) afternoon in Kingston, Ont.
Despite the Blues controlling the pace of play for the bulk of the first period, both teams were held scoreless after 20 minutes of play. Both teams were pushing for offence but goaltenders Erica Fryer and Emma Tennant were perfect when called upon as both netminders made nine saves in the opening frame.
In the second period Queen's opened the scoring with a power play goal. Forward Mikayla Cranney's ninth goal of the season had the Blues trailing by one goal midway through the game. Despite being down, the Blues pushed for a tying goal as Fryer continued to make saves to keep the deficit at one. However, the Blues continued to trail by one goal heading into the third period.
In the final 20 minutes, Fryer continued to make saves to keep Toronto in the game. The Blues got multiple scoring chances, including hitting the post while on the power play in the late stages of the game. With Fryer on the bench for the extra attacker the Blues continued to push for a goal but luck wasn't on their side as the Blues fell 1-0 to the Gaels on the road. Fryer shined between the pipes for the Blues, making 25 saves in the afternoon affair.
With two games remaining in the regular season, the Blues will head back to Toronto for a game on Thursday (Feb. 15) when they host their downtown rivals, the TMU Bold at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
