The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's squash team continued competition on Saturday (Feb. 10) at the 2024 OUA Squash Championships at the White Oaks Resort in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ont.
After finishing Day 1 of the provincial showcase with an unblemished 2-0 record, the Blues appeared to be in good standings ahead of the final pool play matches on Saturday morning. Facing off against the Waterlo Warriors to close out round-robin play, the Blues came up just short in a 4-3 loss. The trio of Ali Shalaby, Will Harris, and Yawar Ashraf all earned victories in the tightly contested match with the Warriors. Despite the loss, the Blues advanced to an OUA semifinal, but matched up with the defending champion Western Mustangs.
Facing off against the perennial champions from London, and a rematch of last year's gold medal match, the Blues were unable to unseat Western from their spot atop the OUA. Toronto fell 7-0 against the Mustangs, but received great efforts from Usman Khan, Luke Neufeld, and Stephen Hunt in the tough semifinal outing.
With one more day and one more match remaining, the Blues will face Waterloo in the bronze medal match. The rematch from the round-robins will commence at 11 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 11).
