Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

BLUES RALLY LATE FOR THRILLING COMEBACK OVER WESTERN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 3-2 against the Western University Mustangs in their second faceoff on Thursday, November 7 at Varsity Arena.

The Blues came out strong in the first period, bringing high energy and intensity to the ice. Their aggressive play set the tone early, as they controlled the puck well and created several scoring opportunities. Despite drawing a couple of penalties, the Blues' penalty kill was rock-solid, keeping Western off the scoreboard. The Blues peppered Western's Jack McNaughton with quality shots but couldn't find the back of the net, with Western's netminder making a few great saves. In the other end, Jordan Fairlie held strong, keeping the score locked at 0-0. The Blues headed into the second period looking to finally capitalize on their chances and get a tally on the board.

The next 20 minutes saw Western open the scoring, with Christian Aiello grabbing a lucky bounce out front and beating Fairlie. Nevertheless, the Blues answered back in thrilling fashion. Toronto struck quickly with a shorthanded goal, with fourth-year Ben Dirven putting in a perfect high-glove snipe that soared past McNaughton, igniting the bench and the crowd. The Blues kept the pressure on, showing relentless energy and dominating puck battles. However, a miscommunication on a line change gave Western the chance to reclaim the lead with a second goal from Nicholas Yearwood. Despite the setback, Toronto was tenacious all period, fighting hard and creating dangerous chances in front of the net.

The Blues took charge in an electrifying third period. Their relentless offense and aggressive forechecking kept Western on their heels, and they were rewarded for their efforts when Jacob King netted a crucial second goal, leveling the score and firing up the Blues bench. With just minutes left, Owen Robinson struck gold to give the Blues a 3-2 lead in a huge momentum swing. Fairlie was stellar, making an impressive 31 saves to keep Toronto in the game, while the Blues piled on the pressure with 37 shots of their own. Dominating from start to finish, Toronto sealed an exhilarating victory in the final moments.

With this win, the Blues improve to 6-4 on the campaign, with the Mustangs falling to 6-3.

The Blues will be fired up for their next game on Sunday (Nov. 10) in Waterloo for their next matchup against Wilfred Laurier University. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the game can be streamed online via oua.tv
