Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 6-2 against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday (Nov 10th) evening in Waterloo.
Â
The Blues came out in the first twenty with speed and determination, setting the tone early on. Nicholas Athanasakos opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, bursting down the ice on a breakaway. With a brilliant move, he outmaneuvered the defence and deftly slid the puck past Laurier's Tristan Malboeuf, putting the Blues on the board in the first three minutes of the game. After a relatively even rest of the first, the last five minutes saw first-year forward Dylan Wightman positioned perfectly in front of the net. He got his stick on a powerful shot from Emmett Sersensits at the point, deflecting it past Malboeuf to extend the Blues lead. The Blues closed out the period with 2-0 advantage over the Golden Hawks.
Â
The Blues continued their offensive charge in the second period, with third-year forward Zack Smith delivering Toronto's third goal. Smith unleashed a blistering shot that caught just enough of the goalie's glove to deflect into the net, giving the Blues a commanding 3-0 lead. However, Laurier responded swiftly, as their captain Patrick Brown made it past the Blues defence to beat goaltender Jordan Fairlie and put Laurier on the board. The latter half of the period saw plenty of penalties for both Toronto and Laurier, but the teams were unable to put another point on the board. Goaltender Jordan Fairlie was especially sharp, making several key saves to keep the Blues in control.
Â
In the final 20 minutes, Laurier took two costly penalties, giving the Blues a prime opportunity to extend their lead. Toronto seized the chance, with Owen Robinson skillfully tipping in a sharp pass from Smith to notch the Blues fourth goal of the game. Only a few minutes later, Ben Woodhouse collected a nice pass from Cooper Way and executed a brilliant deke around Malboeuf, widening Toronto's lead to 5-1. Despite Toronto's commanding lead, Laurier's Bryce Sutherland managed to find an opening and fired a quick shot past Fairlie, cutting the deficit to three. Undeterred, the Blues put their foot back on the gas as Sean Clarke fired a shot that trickled past Malboeuf, securing their sixth goal, and finishing the game at 6-2.
