SECOND HALF SLIP PROVES COSTLY FOR BLUES

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 62-50 versus the visiting Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday (Nov. 6) night at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House.

U of T found success in the first half, leading the visitors 29-27 after two quarters of play. The Blues first half success came courtesy the guard trio of Raya Hafez, Lia Barbieri, and Kaylee Williams.

A second-year standout, Hafez was efficient from distance, scoring 11 points in the first half, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the three-point arc. Hafez finished the night with a game-high 16 points.

Meanwhile, Barbieri notched a team-high 36 minutes, nearly registering a double-double as her final totals included 10 rebounds, eight points, two assists, and two steals.

As for Williams, the veteran guard was all over the court in the first two quarters, adding eight points on 3-for-3 field goals and a made free throw, along with three steals defensively. The entire team defence for the Blues played a major role in the early lead, registering seven total steals and 11 points off Waterloo turnovers at halftime.

However, following the break, the Warriors responded with a 21-8 third quarter, propelling themselves into the lead. Waterloo's size paid dividends, allowing the Warriors to control possession and score efficient baskets down the stretch. The visitors finished the game with a 21-rebound advantage (61-40) over the Blues, while shooting over 50 percent from the floor in the third quarter push.

Jaime Newell and Carina Fiore tied for Waterloo's team-high with 12 points each, while Nehita Oko-Oboh pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Nov. 9) night, traveling to face the Guelph Gryphons. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the game streamed live on oua.tv.
