The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's and men's swimming teams both claimed the OUA Stratten Divisional Championships following another exciting day of action at the Athletic Centre Pool on Sunday (Nov. 24) afternoon.
"It is always nice to win, but it is important how you win," said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald. "We did it with a lot of superb swims and that is satisfying."
The U of T women earned the overall banner after accumulating a total team score of 1002 throughout the two-days of competition. The Blues were followed by Western in second with 882, McMaster in third with 671, and Waterloo with fourth in 619.
Meanwhile, the Varsity Blues men dominated with a team total of 1022.5, finishing ahead of McMaster in second (754), Waterloo in third (730.5), and Western in fourth (670).
The Toronto women add another 16 total podium finishes on Day 2, including six first place. The U of T men also stepped on the podium another 10 times with eight being to the top step.
Third-year swimmer Nina Mollin earned two more individual gold medals and a relay gold on Day 2 winning the 200m IM and 200m butterfly, before joining Kayla Houlder, Angelica Both, and Teagan Vander Leek to win the 400m freestyle relay. Also adding to the Blues first place results were Vander Leek in the 100m freestyle, Bath in the 100m backstroke, and Katie Marovino in the 400m freestyle.
Meanwhile, the Toronto men saw nine different swimmers collect a first-place finish on Day 2, led by fourth-year veteran Jacob Gallant who secured the win in the 200m IM and 200m breaststroke. Joining Gallant as top finishers were Ben Loewen in the 200m butterfly, Andrew Herman in the 100m backstroke, Albert Bouley in the 50m butterfly, Quinn Matteis in the 400m freestyle, and the combinations of Herman, Nathan Thomas, Aiden Harris, and Liam Weaver in the 200m medley relay and Herman, Loewen, Bouley, and Carter Buck in the 400m freestyle relay.
"In addition to all the strong performances from our returners, we are learning how our rookies race," noted Varsity Blues swimming assistant head coach Linda Kiefer. "It is good to see the advancement in their performances, and we are looking forward to even more as we continue our season into the new year."
The divisional championships marked the end of the fall semester competition schedule for the Blues. U of T swimming will next be back in the pool in 2025, hosting the York Lions in a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 4.
