The Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team defeated Toronto Metropolitan University Bold 84-67 in the first-ever Metro Hoops Classic at Goldring Centre on Friday (Nov. 1) night.
The Blues efficient shooting and control over the boards were instrumental in the win, with a field goal percentage of 52.2% compared to TMU's 34.6%. Fourth-year standout Iñaki Alvarez led Toronto with 24 points, including four three-pointers, and added three steals to stifle the TMU offense. Second-year guard Simeon Jeffers was pivotal as well, scoring 20 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Toronto established their dominance in the second quarter, outscoring TMU 26-16. They maintained this momentum throughout the third, extending the lead to 17 points by mid-quarter. The Bold struggled with free throws, going only 2-for-8, further hindering their comeback chances.
For the Bold, Aaron Rhooms stood out with a team-high 23 points, adding five rebounds and four steals, while Galand Okeugo contributed 10 points and four rebounds. However, Toronto's superior rebounding (56 to TMU's 42) and second-chance opportunities (18 points) highlighted TMU's defensive lapses.
Despite TMU's attempts to close the gap, the Blues balanced attack and ball distribution, marked by 21 assists, kept them in control. With this win, Toronto advances to a 2-1 season record, matching TMU's standing.
Up next, the Blues host the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday (Nov. 3). Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the game being streamed online at oua.tv and tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets.
