The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the TMU Bold 4-2 on Wednesday night at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Â
After an important break-away save by first-year netminder Sebastian Resar, the Blues opened the scoring on the ensuing rush. Third-year forward Eddie Yan wired a one-timer into the top corner off a nice passing play from Zack Smith and Dylan Wightman on the man advantage.
Â
TMU's Tyler Savard evened the score on the powerplay early in the second period, but the Blues were quick to respond as fourth-year veteran Owen Robinson found the back of the net off an Eddie Yan rebound just over three minutes later. Toronto took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission. Â
Â
The Varsity Blues picked up momentum in the final frame. After beating TMU's defence, Julian Recine extended the lead to 3-1 after ripping a beautiful far side shot to beat TMU goalie Kai Edmond. The Bold then found their footing on a powerplay, as with under six minutes left Jaden Condotta scored after Resar was screened, making it a one-goal game.
Â
Toronto stood tall though and Billy Moskal hit the empty net to make the score 4-2.
Â
Resar ended the night with 37 saves in the win.
Â
The Varsity Blues will be looking to feed off the home crowd's energy and build on this win as they gear up for an electrifying home opener on Saturday, October 12 versus the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
