The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team couldn't pull the win in their second exhibition game of the season at Goldring Centre in downtown Toronto, despite fifth-year guard Inaki Alvarez leading all scorers with 22 points.
Â
The Blues opened the first quarter with a strong defensive mindset, but many and-one opportunities extended the Stingers lead from the jump. In the second quarter, the Stingers had their largest lead of 19 points, but third-year Simon Fraser transfer Nigel Hylton's offensive and defensive effort lowered the gap to 14 before halftime, with the score set at 45-31 to the Stingers.
Â
Down at the half, fourth-year centre Lennart Weber came out strong in the third, pushing pace offensively to cut the lead to two. Weber notched 18 points in today's matchup, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and over 40% from beyond the arc. In just his second game for the Blues, freshman guard Rohan Scott-Smith checked into the game and made an immediate impact; getting fouled and making both free throws to give the Blues their first lead since the first quarter at 53-51.
Â
Great defence extended through the third, leading to consistent lead changes between the Blues and Stingers. Though the Blues started the fourth quarter strong, their offence was stagnant, leading to an 8-2 run by the Stingers in the last two minutes, extending their lead and eventual win, with the final score being 75-67.
Â
The Blues play their next exhibition game on October 10th, defending home court at Goldring Centre against the Memorial University of Newfoundland, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
