The No. 8 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team fell 5-2 to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at Varsity Stadium on Wednesday (Oct. 23).
Ontario Tech opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when captain Alexander Irwin found the back of the net, by way of Koby Greaves. The Ridgebacks doubled their lead 10 minutes later through Matthew Keeler, assisted by Alex Maadanian. Right before halftime, Irwin scored his second goal, capitalizing on another assist from Keeler, putting Ontario Tech ahead 3-0 at the break.
Just two minutes into the second half, Ontario Tech's Erion Metaj made it 4-0, as Maadanian recorded his second assist of the game. The Ridgebacks' relentless pressure continued as Maadanian then scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute, to extend Ontario Tech's lead to 5-0.
In the 81st minute, Toronto's Niklas Hallam drew a penalty that was than converted by Andrea Schifano for his 11th goal of the season. The Blues added another in the dying moments of the match, with Kingsley Belele scoring off an assist from Mehdi Essoussi.
Toronto dominated possession throughout the game, registering 21 shots compared to Ontario Tech's 11, but Ontario Tech goalkeeper Kevon Grant stood tall, making 10 saves throughout the match.
With the loss, Toronto concludes their 2024 season with a 9-2-1 record.
