FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS MARTLETS TO COMPLETE UNDEFEATED REGULAR SEASON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team closed out an undefeated regular season with a 6-0 win over the McGill Martlets on Sunday, October 20 on Back Campus Fields.

Molly Koop and Ziara Scaringi opened the scoring for the Blues with tallies just over a minute apart midway through the first quarter. Scaringi added her second of the game and fourth of the season early in the second quarter to give Toronto a three-goal lead.

Natalie Anderson and Elizabeth Assimes scored on penalty corners in the third quarter for the Blues, extending their lead. Fourth-year defender Anderson's goal was her first of the season and first of her OUA career. Koop found the back of the net for her second goal of the game and fourth of the weekend later in the quarter to seal the deal for the Blues.

Toronto controlled possession for most of the game, recording 22 shots and 16 on target while holding the Martlets shotless. The Blues also had 14 penalty corner opportunities as they kept the ball in McGill's end for most of the match.

Charlotte Pennell played the full 60 minutes and earned her second win and shutout of the weekend and season.

With this win, Toronto ends the regular season with a 9-0-1 record, winning nine straight games after tying their opener. This secures them first place in the OUA East division and a berth in next weekend's OUA Championship tournament.

The Blues host the OUA field hockey championships next weekend at Back Campus Fields, with their first game on Saturday, October 26 at 3 p.m. and a medal game to be played on Sunday, October 27.
