The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 4-1 versus the Western Mustangs on the road in London on Saturday (Oct. 19).
The first period featured a hefty amount of action as the Blues were met with constant pressure from the Mustangs, providing Blues starting goaltender Jordan Fairlie with plenty of work in the early minutes of the game. Countless scoring opportunities were turned away by strong defensive play, with Fairlie finishing the contest with 35 total saves.
However, Western's Jack Gravelle broke the deadlock early in the second frame, beating Fairlie with a top-corner shot from just inside the blue line. Midway through the second period, the Mustangs would add another, but Toronto restored the one goal deficit courtesy a Zack Smith marker with under two minutes remaining in the second 20 minutes of action. Both Owen Robinson and Nicholas Wong picked up assists on the lone goal for the Blues.
The back-and-forth battle between the two teams intensified, including a break-away chance for the Mustangs which was ended by an absolutely massive wind-mill glove save by Fairlie. Following a scoreless first 10 minutes of the third period though, Western finally found insurance markers adding a goal with under seven minutes remaining and an empty netter late. Both teams battled incredibly hard, with shots on goal nearly even — Toronto had 36 shots while Western had 39.
With the result, the Blues will look to bounce back as they continue a four-game road trip next versus the Windsor Lancers on Sunday (Oct. 20) afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m., with all the action available to stream live and on-demand via
