The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fell 85-61 in their last preseason match-up against the Laval Rouge et Or during the annual Laval Preseason Tournament on Saturday (Oct. 19).
Despite a solid 18 point effort from fifth-year guard Iñaki Alvarez, the Blues couldn't overcome their offensive struggles in combination with Laval's strong performance. The Blues were outscored in each of the four quarters, shooting just 29.7 percent from the field throughout the duration of the final tuneup contest. 11 different U of T players saw action in the tough road loss, with 10 players tallying points. In addition to Alvarez, Blues newcomer Quarry Whyne added 10 points and siz rebounds, while third-year forward Ryan Rudnick chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and one assist. Toronto's best output came in the fourth quarter where the team shot 3-for-4 from behind the three-point line and 33 percent from the floor.
Meanwhile, Laval saw four players reach double-digit points in the home court win, led by 19 points from Saydou Sall. Sall was persistent from the three-point line, finishing the contest 5-for-11 from distance, while the Rouge et Or as a team went 12-for-32 from beyond the arc. Mohamed Keita also impressed on the boards for Laval, coming down with 10 rebounds, while adding four block defensively.
