The No. 6 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team 4-2 against the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday (Oct. 18) night in Ottawa, Ont.

The first period saw back and forth action between Toronto and Ottawa with the Blues gaining the edge first. Fourth-year captain Emma Potter stormed her way through the offensive zone and chased down her own rebound, putting the puck on her backhand and into the back of the net to put the Blues up 1-0 midway through the first period.

Ottawa responded with a goal of their own as forward Arianne Gagnon found the back of the net to tie the game at one. Both teams continued to trade chances but went into the first intermission with a 1-1 score.

The Gee-Gees found the back of the net for the second time in the game in the second period with Gagon once again being the goal scorer to give Ottawa their first lead of the night. The Blues battled for offense, generating quality chances as the second period progressed but went into the third period looking for an equalizer, trailing 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

In the third period Blues first-year goalie Lyla McKinnon made excellent saves to keep the deficit at one and late in the third the Blues scored quickly and in bunches. Second-year forwards Ashley and Taylor Delahey connected as the latter found the back of the net for her second goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. 53 seconds later second-year forward Christina Alexiou fired a shot top shelf to regain the lead for the Blues in the third period.

Just under three minutes later the Blues forced a turnover in the Gee-Gees' defensive zone and second-year forward Emma Elders capitalized and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season to give the Blues a 4-2 lead.

The Blues held on to their 4-2 lead for the rest of the game as McKinnon continued to make big saves, finishing the game with 22 stops and securing her first win in the OUA.
