BLUES BEST GOLDEN HAWKS FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday (Oct. 12) night in Waterloo, Ont.

Second-year Blues netminder Carlee Vance was tested early in her first start of the season, stopping nine of 10 shots in the opening frame. Vance's strong goaltending gave the Blues momentum as Toronto cycled the puck in the offensive zone and with traffic in front of the Golden Hawks net, fifth-year forward Juliette Blais-Savoie fired in a shot from the blueline to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.

Laurier was able to respond with a goal of their own with less than a minute left in the first period off the stick of Ella Jackson. The Blues were able to quickly respond as just 38 seconds later second-year forward Ashley Delahey connected with Taylor Delahey in front of the net to regain the lead, going into first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

U of T was able to add to their lead three and a half minutes into the second period as second-year forward Christina Alexiou danced her way through the slot and beat Laurier netminder Kathryn Raitano. Laurier subbed Kayla Renaud into the crease and Toronto took their 3-1 lead into the third period.

In the final 20 minutes the Blues stood tall, shutting down Laurier's offence while still firing shots towards their goal. Vance made some of the best of her 26 saves in the game to ensure the win for the Blues.

The Blues will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 19) when they take on the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees in Ottawa, Ont. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
