U OF T WIN THE MCMASTER INVITATIONAL

Traveling to Hamilton this weekend for the McMaster Invitational, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's curling team claimed the top spot with an undefeated 4-0 record.

The squad of Amanda Smith, Stella Armstrong, Danielle Serra, Nadia Jouanah, and Eri Ogihara competed in the two days of competition, rotating lineups throughout.

Toronto opened the weekend with a 7-3 win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday (Jan. 6) morning. After falling behind 3-2 following the second end, the Blues were able to go on a run of five points through the next four ends to secure the opening victory.

U of T then followed the early morning win with a decisive 9-1 victory over the Western Mustangs to close out Day 1 of the invitational. The Blues took control of the match late, securing seven points in total between the fourth and fifth ends.

The offence continued to roll into Sunday (Jan. 7) as Toronto claimed an 11-3 win over Algoma to open Day 2. Leading 6-3 heading into the sixth end, U of T exploded for five to force a quick end to the early morning contest.

Finishing off the weekend versus the host McMaster Marauders, a 7-3 win secured the overall invitational victory for the Blues. Toronto scored in four consecutive ends to claim the trophy.

Next up, the Blues will head to the Brock University Invitational in St. Catharines from Jan. 20-21.
