The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team led from start to finish in an 83-57 road victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday (Jan. 27) night in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
The Blues were exceptional from the opening tip-off, quickly jumping out to a 20-point lead as they led Algoma 27-7 at the end of the first quarter. By the end of the night offence were able to shoot over 47 percent from the field, while dominating down low with 42 points in the paint. Meanwhile the U of T defence collected nine steals and converted 26 points from Thunderbird turnovers.
Blues veteran forward Anthony Daudu secured a game-high 20 points, while adding seven rebounds, three steals, one block, and one assist to round out his stat line for the night. The impressive outing for Daudu also marked a significant milestone as he recorded both his 500th career point and 500th career rebound as a Varsity Blue in the victory. Daudu becomes one of just a handful of Blues players to achieve the remarkable feat in both categories.
U of T season scoring leader Callum Baker chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while the strong all-around play continued with Noah Ngamba registering 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists. In total 10 Blues players scored a basket in the win.
Boluwatife Obasoto topped the Thunderbirds with a team-high 14 points, with 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Toronto next return to the Goldring Centre to host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Friday night showdown. Tickets for Blues home games are available at
