Competing in six games over three days this weekend, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team earned a perfect sweep, defeating York, Carleton, and TMU in doubleheaders.
Opening the busy schedule on Friday (Sept. 22) versus the Lions, the Blues picked up 10-0 and 3-2 wins. Joely Ma started in the pitching circle for Game 1, delivering a complete game shutout, conceding just four hits over five innings while striking out five. Six different Blues batters recorded a double from the batters box in the decisive win, led by a 4-for-4 day at the plate by Isabella Trakosas who garnered two RBI and two runs. In a much more tightly contested Game 2, it was Lauren Greco who delivered in the clutch for U of T, connecting on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Julia Lacaria drew the start in the pitching circle for the Varsity Blues, giving up two hits and two runs over five innings, striking out four and walking three.
Welcoming the Ravens to Toronto the very next day, U of T made quick work of Carleton with identical 11-1 victories in the Saturday (Sept. 23) back-to-back. At the plate in Game 1, the Blues were led by a 3-for-3 outing by veteran shortstop Beth DeConinck who tallied a triple and three RBI. Meanwhile, in Game 2 it was both Shilo Chislett and Olivia Mather who went a perfect 2-for-2, with Chislett scoring two RBI and three runs, while Mather recorded one RBI and one run. Zoe Goldberg earned the win for the Blues in the pitching circle for Game 1, while Mather registered the win as the starting pitcher in Game 2.
Rounding out the weekend, the Blues knocked off the TMU Bold 9-2 and 14-8 on Sunday (Sept. 24). Joining the mix as one of the offensive standouts this weekend, Amanda DeConinck went 3-for-3 in Game 1, scoring three RBI and one run, while Greco added a double and triple to her statline, and Amelia Collett outran the opposition for a solo inside the park home run. In the pitching circle Ma and Mather combined for the five inning win. Then in Game 2, Chislett shined once again for the Blues going 2-for-3 with a three run home run. Meanwhile Trakosas also secured a team-high four hits in the win, while Lacaria was awarded the win in the pitchers circle.
Currently on a 10-game win streak, the Blues will host another pari of doubleheaders this weekend at Dentonia Park, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 30 versus the York Lions once again. First pitch for the Saturday GTA showdown is scheduled for 2 p.m.
