BLUES GO UNDEFEATED IN BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLEHEADERS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team earned four total wins, knocking off both the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend in Ottawa.

U of T opened the weekend road-swing defeating the Gee-Gees 11-4 and 3-0 on Saturday (Sept. 16) afternoon in the nation's capital.

In the opening contest Toronto scored eight runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away from the home side. At the plate, Janelle Hodge was sensational for the Blues going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Both Lauren Greco and Madison Mattar added two RBI apiece in the big series opening win.

In Game 2, the combined pitching of starter Olivia Mather, along with relievers Julia Lacaria and Zoe Goldberg shutout the Gee-Gees offence. Mather earned the win with 4.1 innings pitched and two strikeouts, while conceding just one hit.

Shifting gears to the Sunday (Sept. 17) doubleheader versus Carleton, Toronto picked up 9-0 and 13-4 victories to finish the weekend undefeated.

Starting in the pitching circle against the Ravens, Goldberg delivered a five inning shutout, striking out five batters, while giving up just two hits. Six different Blues batters earned an RBI, with Mather collecting three hits, two runs, and an RBI to lead the way. Both Isabella Trakosas and Madison Espinola also finished the opening game with three hits apiece.

Toronto finished their weekend with a bang as the Blues registered 11 runs through the first two innings of Game 2 versus Carleton. Third-year outfielder Shilo Chislett delivered an emphatic two run home run to left to field to close out the impressive opening two innings. Lauren Howorth added another three RBI, while Shirley Chan recorded two. Lacaria picked up the win as the starting pitcher allowing just two earned runs on six hits through four innings.

The Blues will remain on the road, but won't travel to far as they next challenge the York Lions on Friday, Sept. 22. First pitch in the opening contest of the doubleheader is scheduled for 7 p.m.
