The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 on Saturday night (Feb. 4) in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
With the win, the Blues improve to 13-10-2 and remain in fifth place in the OUA West division with two regular season games remaining.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Golden Hawks opened the scoring 3:12 into the contest as Luke Wilson tipped the puck past Blues netminder Jett Alexander. Laurier extended their lead late in the frame when Patrick Brown scored a similar goal, redirecting a point shot into the net. The Blues were down 2-0 after 20 minutes.
Â
The Blues came out with energy in the second period and finally got on the board just over the halfway mark. Second-year defencement Emmett Serensits received a pass from Owen Robinson and sent a booming shot from the point through traffic and into the back of the net. U of T netminder Jett Alexander made 18 saves in the second frame and Toronto trailed 2-1 heading into the third period.
Â
Owen Robinson evened the score 5:37 into the third frame. The second-year forward from Orangeville, Ont., went end-to-end and pulled a nifty move to beat Laurier netminder Christian Propp for his eighth goal of the season.
Â
Just over three minutes later, Blues assistant captain Cole Purboo buried a Ryan Barbosa rebound on the powerplay to give the Blues the lead.
Â
Alexander ended the night with 31 saves in the win.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues are back in action next Friday, February 10 when they host the York Lions at Varsity Arena. Toronto will be celebrating their graduating players in a special pre-game ceremony prior to puck drop at 7 p.m.
