Thanks to two goals from Ross Krieger, the Varsity Blues men's hockey team beat the No. 8 nationally-ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves 3-2 in overtime in Game 2 of the OUA quarter-final on Friday (Feb. 24) night in Thunder Bay, Ont.
WHAT HAPPENED:Â It was a quiet first period for both teams with Blues goalie Jett Alexander and Thunderwolves goalie Christian Cicigoi holding the opposition off the scoresheet.Â
Lakehead scored first just under halfway through the second period after a power play goal from Greg Smith. The Thunderwolves would not hold their lead for long, as Blues second-year forward added a goal of his own on the power play.
U of T grabbed their first lead of the game early in the third period as Krieger grabbed his first goal of the playoffs. Noah Massie tied up the game with seven minutes to play in the third.
The Blues and Thunderwolves battled hard through overtime, but U of T came out victorious with Krieger scoring his second goal of the game with under a minute left to play.
Blues starting goalie Jett Alexander made 41 saves for the win.
