The No. 1 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell to the Nipissing Lakers 2-1 in overtime on Saturday (Feb. 11) night in North Bay, Ont.
With the loss, the Blues sit first in the OUA East division with 62 points and a 20-2-1-2 record.Â
WHAT HAPPENED:Â The Lakers came out strong in the first period outshooting the Blues 10-2. Despite that, U of T starting goalie Erica Fryer held down the fort not allowing a goal in the first. The second period was a better one for the Blues having multiple high-quality chances against the Lakers, but for a second straight period, both teams were held scoreless.Â
Blues forward Sophie Grawbarger opened the scoring late in the third period to give the Blues the lead. Katie Chomiak scored with two-and-a-half minutes remaining to tie up the game for the Lakers. Chomiak scored her fourth goal in two nights to win the game for the Lakers in overtime.Â
Fryer finished the game with 31 saves through the contest.
UP NEXT:Â The Varsity Blues return home Thursday, February 16 when they face off against the TMU Bold for their final regular season home game. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
