The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team opened their weekend series versus the Lakehead Thunderwolves with a come-from-behind 93-89 victory at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport on Friday (Dec. 1) night.
While the Thunderwolves led through the first three quarters, it was the Blues who would pull away in the fourth. Aided by fast break plays and excellent three-point shooting, the Blues outscored the Thunderwolves 22-17 in the final frame to take the three-point win. The Blues offence proved especially potent in the second and third quarters to close the gap, outscoring the Thunderwolves with 29 and 24 points respectively. With the pressure on, the Thunderwolves often found themselves in foul trouble, conceding 15 total free throw attempts to the Blues.
Leading the Blues was current OUA leading scorer Callum Baker. Baker finished the night with a game-high 24 points, while also securing four rebounds and four assists. First-year guard Nadav Sahar proved vital to the Blues offence recording 23 points, going 8-for-10 from the field and 7-for-8 from the three-point line. Fifth-year transfer Dane Quest rounded out the Blues double-digit scorers, tallying 13 points and adding six rebounds and two assists.
On the boards, Anthony Daudu led all players with ten rebounds, marking his third instance of double-digit rebounds this season.
Leading the Thunderwolves was third-year guard Chris Sagl. The Oakville, Ont. native tallied 24 points in 27 minutes of action.
The Blues are back at it tomorrow at the Goldring Centre in a rematch versus the Thunderwolves. Tip-off for the home contest is scheduled for 8 p.m., while tickets are available at
