BLUES SWEEP NCWP WEEKEND

The Varsity Blues women's water polo team travelled to Kingston for three games against NCWP opponents and came away with three convincing wins at the Queen's Invitational this past weekend (Nov. 4-5).

The victories left the Blues undefeated in the regular season and gave the squad the No. 1 seed heading into the NCWP Championships, hosted by the University of Ottawa, at the end of this month.

Hannah Levin, the Blues' season scoring leader, again led the Toronto attack this weekend with 12 goals.  Fourth year starting goalie Hana Truchla was rock steady in the net and did not concede a goal in five periods of play.

The Blues opened the weekend with a tilt against the McGill Martlets and wasted no time in establishing control of the game by racing out to a 5-0 first quarter lead.

The Toronto offence turned it up another notch taking the second period by a score of 7-1, heading into halftime with a commanding 12-1 advantage.

The Martlets fought back in the second half making both quarters one goal affairs but the first half lead was too much and the Blues triumphed 18-5.

Levin led all scorers with four goals. Fourth-year co-captain Julia DeCaire notched a hat trick in support as the pair accounted for more than a third of the Blues' goals. Rookies Lillian Wheatley, Liana Sheridan and Josie Andrist each recorded two goals while third-year utility Sidney Gagne, second-year utility Rose Esplen and rookies Ava Stimson and Amy Pearce all added a goal apiece.

Against the host Golden Gaels, the Blues employed a suffocating press defence in registering the team's first shut out of the season.

The opening quarter was a low scoring affair with the Blues potting a pair of goals. In the second, Toronto's offence came alive and doubled the output of the first quarter as the Blues jumped out to a 6-0 half time advantage. From then on it was a pair of three goal quarters leading to a final tally of 12-0.

Levin had a huge game striking for five goals.  Stimson tallied a hat trick while Pearce found the back of the net twice.  Sheridan and Andrist each added one marker.

Truchla and fourth-year goalie Averi Doxtator combined for the shutout.

BLUES  18    Ottawa 1

The Blues jumped out to a strong 6-0 lead in the opening quarter of the game against the Gee-Gees.  Toronto was quick to the counterattack, which resulted in four of the team's first period goals.

It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Blues tacked on four more goals to take a 10-1 lead heading into half time.

The Blues struck for four markers in each of the remaining two periods while holding the Gee Gees off the scoresheet en route to a 18-1 victory.

Levin and DeCaire each scored a hat trick. Fourth year co-captain Alexandra Lee and Chloe MacVicar along with Andrist, Sheridan, Stimson and Wheatley all tallied twice.
Truchla, Doxtator and fellow fourth-year goalie Gabby Vas combined to hold the Gee Gees to one goal.

Up next, the Blues make their way south of the border for their NCAA Northern California tour, including games against division 1 opponents Santa Clara University and No. 12 ranked University of the Pacific.
