The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team bested the York Lions 3-1 on Friday (Oct. 27) night at Canlan Sports Arena in Toronto.
Â
After a scoreless first frame, the Blues were on the right side of some faulty play by the Lions in their own zone, allowing U of T to open the scoring just 27 seconds into the second period. Second-year forward Emma Elders took advantage of Lions goaltender Emma Wedgewood mishandling the puck before scoring on an empty net to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.
Â
Shortly after, the Blues struck again as forwards Nikki McDonald and Kaitlyn McKnight got a two-on-one counter-attack, with McKnight finishing it off to double the lead.
Â
In the later stages of the second period, Toronto added another when Taylor Delahey's pass in front deflected off of Sophie Grawbarger and into the net to make it a 3-0 advantage after two periods of play.
Â
In the third period, the Blues played a steady defensive game conceding just one goal to York defender Jillian Milligan. The Lions would make a late surge but Toronto would stand tall even with the home side net empty down the strecth.
U of T goaltender Erica Fryer was strong in net making 13 saves in the victory.
Â
The Blues will return home to Varsity Arena next hosting the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, Nov. 10. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets for the home game can be purchased at
