MASTROMATTEO COLLECTS SILVER AND BRONZE AT 2023 PAN AM GAMES

Competing at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile as a member of Team Canada, University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimmer Gabriel Mastromatteo earned a silver and bronze medal alongside his teammates in both the mixed and men's 4 x 100m medley relays.

The third-year commerce student was joined by fellow Team Canada swimmers Javier Acevedo, Maggie MacNeil, and Mary-Sophie Harvey in the mixed medley final on Monday (Oct. 23), after Canada qualified first in their morning heat. Racing against some of the best in the world, Mastromatteo and Team Canada placed second overall in the event final with a time of 3:46.20, finishing behind the United States of America who set a new Pan American record time of 3:44.71 enroute to the gold.

Next for Mastromatteo, competing alongside Acevedo once again, and joined by Canadian swimmers Blake Tierney and Finlay Knox, the Varsity Blue finished out his competition schedule with the men's medley relay where Team Canada was able to race to a third place finish on Wednesday (Oct. 25). After Canada claimed first in their heat with a time of 3:39.27, they qualified third overall heading into the event final. The Canadian quartet then posted an even faster time of 3:35.72, finishing just 0.60 seconds behind the silver medalist from Brazil and 2.43 seconds behind the first place Univted States of America.

In addition to the relay medals, Mastromatteo also competed in his signature event of the 100m breaststroke at the international competition, placing sixth overall. The Kenora native began by placing second in his 100m breastsroke heat with a time of 1:01.37. The morning result qualified Mastromatteo for the evening final, where he would go on to post a nearly identical time of 1:01.39 , finishing just 0.22 seconds outside the top five.
