VARSITY BLUES SWEEP FIRST MEET OF THE YEAR

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams competed in the annual Downtown Sprint Meet - their first official swim meet of the season on October 20-22 at U of T's Athletic Centre.
 
The Varsity Blues started off the season sweeping every category they competed in for the local meet.
 
MEN'S RESULTS:
The 50m butterfly race was dominated by the Blues, taking up the top six spots with Liam Weaver finishing first overall, touching the wall in a time of 25.10. He claimed his second category of the meet the next day as he finished first in the 100m freestyle with a time of 50.77.
 
Third-year swimmer Michael Sava claimed first in the 200m butterfly, touching the wall over five seconds ahead of the closest competitor.
 
The strong men's results were rounded out by rookies Bill Dongfang and Andrew Herman who placed first in the 100m butterfly and 50m backstroke respectively, with Herman setting a new personal best.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS:
Shifting to the women, second-year swimmer Nina Mollin claimed the top step in the 200m butterfly, racing to a win that saw her over five seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
 
Meanwhile, Blues fifth-year veterans Ainsley McMurray and Caroline Carruthers tied for first in the 50m butterfly, touching the wall with an identical time of 28.24. Dominating the weekend, McMurray went on to also place first in 25m freestyle (12.29) and 100m butterfly (1:02.50).
 
First-year swimmer Katie Schroeder claimed victory in the 200m backstroke - her first win as a member of the Varsity Blues.
 
Second-year swimmer Teagan McKenzie wrapped up the meet for U of T, beating her personal best and claiming the 200m Freestyle category at 2:03.60.
 
The Varsity Blues will be back in action this Friday (Oct. 27) in two dual meets south of the border, with the women's team going against Rutgers and the men's team competing against Columbia.
