The Varsity Blues softball team beat the Western Mustangs 7-6 in the OUS final to claim their first championship since 2005 on Sunday (Oct. 22) afternoon in Paris, Ont.
Opening the day, the Blues beat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 6-3 in the semifinals. After the Gee-Gees got themselves on the board in the top of the first, Lauren Greco hit a solo home run to center field for the blue and white at the bottom of the first. Greco, Isabella Trakosas, Amelia Collet and Madison Mattar solidified the win for the Blues with a run each in the bottom of the third. Olivia Mather earned the win for the Blues, surrendering one hit and zero runs, while striking out two batters.
In the afternoon, the Blues took on the Mustangs in the OUS final. Julia Lacaria earned the win for the Blues in the final, with the reliever giving up three hits and zero runs over two and a third innings. With the game tied at the bottom of the seventh, veteran Amanda DeConinck brought home the winning run after hitting a single.
After her late game heroics, DeConinck was named the OUS MVP. Rookie Olivia Mather recorded two runs in the Blues win, with Shirley Chan, Lauren Greco, Madison Mattar and Janelle Hodge picking up a run each.
