Picking up wins over Brock and Queen's on the opening day of the Ontario University Softball (OUS) Championship, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team has secured their spot in the semifinal round.
Traveling to Paris, Ont. for the provincial showcase event, the Blues began the day with a 4-3 opening round victory over the Brock Badgers. Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, OUS all-star Isabella Trakosas delivered a two RBI sacrifice fly to secure a walk-off win and advance the Blues along the top bracket. In the pitching duel, the combination of Joely Ma and Olivia Mather took to the pitching circle for the Blues. Ma, who was named the OUS East Pitcher of the Year the night prior, went four solid innings conceding three runs on four hits and one walk. Appearing in relief, Mather shutout the Badgers the rest of the way, while also striking out four.
A much different result in their OUS quarter-final matchup versus the Queen's Gales, Toronto dominated in a 7-1 win. Scoring across four of the five innings to start, U of T built their lead one run at a time. The Blues were led by a 3-for-3 day at the plate for Mather, who recorded two RBI. Both Trakosas and veteran Lauren Greco also recorded multi-hits at the plate, with each adding an RBI as well. In the pitching circle, first-year pitcher Julia Lacaria was dominant throwing a complete game with just one run allowed on seven hits and three walks.
Following the two wins, the Blues advance to an OUS semifinal showdown versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees tomorrow (Oct. 22) morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
